Coimbatore: Four years after the public grievance redress meeting was suspended abruptly, the city corporation revived the meeting on Wednesday. From now on, the meeting would be conducted on every Wednesdays at the Town Hall on the corporation premises between 8am and 11am.
On the first day, the corporation received 61 petitions, including 18 from east zone, 14 from west zone and eight from north zone. Most of the petitions pertain to improper road facilities, drinking water facilities and sanitation.
“The main purpose of reviving the meeting is to meet the public in person to understand the grievances and to take steps to resolve them immediately. Public grievances would be heard in front of the deputy commissioner, head of the departments and officials who look after important projects in the city. So that the grievances could be addressed at the earliest,” corporation commissioner Sravan Kumar Jatavath said.
Through the meetings, we would be able to know to what extend the corporation had provided basic amenities to the public and it, in a way, would help us to improve our services, he said.
An internal meeting would be held immediately after the grievance redress meeting to discuss the steps needed to be taken to resolve the issues and officials were directed to report back the number of grievances that they had resolved in a week, the commissioner added.
While simple issues like changing names in the certificates would be resolved on the spot, two to three-week time would be given to resolve all major issues, he said, adding that the grievances would be prioritized and addressed at the earliest.
Explaining that the public grievances would be uploaded on online redressal system, corporation sources said each petition is numbered and segregated based on the subject and zone, so that it would be easy to track it down.
In the last four years when the meeting was abandoned, the corporation had received petitions through its WhatsApp number and grievance application. Even though a lot of complaints were received, most of them remained untouched even after weeks together.
