Audi SQ8 Is A Less Practical, More Expensive Take On The SQ7

While most automakers are saying a definite no to diesels, Audi has launched yet another low-revving model with sporty performance: the SQ8.

It’s the current range-topping member of the lineup and uses the same powertrain as the SQ7, which comes with a couple of extra seats and costs a few thousands less in Germany, compared to the SQ8’s €102,900 ($116,190) starting price.

The main feature of the sporty SAV is the 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8 with an electric powered compressor that eliminates turbo lag. The 435 PS (429 hp / 320 kW) and 900 Nm (664 lb-ft) of torque is directed to a Quattro all-wheel drive system via an eight-speed automatic transmission. This enables the crossover to rocket to 100 km/h (62 mph) in 4.8 seconds and hit an electronically limited top speed of 250 km/h (155 mph). The average fuel consumption in the WLTP cycle is 7.8 l/100 km (30.2 mpg US / 36.2 mpg UK).

The SQ8 stands out from the non-S models thanks to sportier styling inside and out. It sits on standard 21-inch wheels and comes with an adaptive air suspension which can raise or lower the body by up to 90 mm (3.5 in). All-wheel steering, a sport differential and an electromechanical active roll stabilization system are all optional extras.

Aside from announcing some details about the SQ8 and releasing a generous image gallery, Audi also allowed journalists to drive the model. One of the first reviews comes from Australia’s CarSales, who weren’t so impressed by the sporty crossover, mostly because there is a far better alternative out there – the SQ7. However, that doesn’t mean that it’s not good, but we’ll let the reviewer take it from here.
