Bombay HC notices to civic bodies over plea on Metro route

Bombay high court
PUNE: The Bombay high court has directed to issue notices to the Pune and the Pimpri Chinchwad municipal corporations while declining the prayer by petitioner Deepak Nathani for a stay on the Pune Metro construction on the realigned plan passing through the periphery of Salim Ali Bird Sanctuary.
The petition is regarding the Vanaz to Ramwadi Pune Metro corridor number two. It challenges the new alignment route on the grounds that the length and cost has increased and the new alignment goes to the bird sanctuary and nature city of park, which would require cutting of 300 trees and further acquisition of private and government lands.
The petitioner has suggested that the MahaMetro, which is implementing the Metro rail project, should follow the original alignment.
The MahaMetro said in a statement that the case was listed on Wednesday and the counsels for all the parties were present except for the Pune Municipal Corporation and the Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation.

The HC also pointed out that one more petition relating to the same matter had been filed. The petitioner’s counsel though claimed that their plea was slightly different. The counsel for MahaMetro opposed the prayer for stay. The matter has been adjourned till the two civic bodies file their responses.
Bird watchers had earlier said bird arrivals have been steadily declining along with the ecosystems on the river.
