NEW DELHI: Rahul Gandhi, who had already announced his decision to quit as Congress president, on Wednesday tweeted his resignation letter taking responsibility for the party's loss in 2019 election and said that "accountability is critical for the future growth of the party."
Asserting that numerous people will have to be made accountable for the failure of 2019, Rahul Gandhi in his open letter says "rebuilding the party requires hard decisions. Congress must radically transform itself, it is party's duty to defend people's voices that BJP is crushing."
On finding his successor, Rahul says, "I suggest way forward would be to entrust a group of people with task of beginning searching for a new president."
"Immediately after resigning, I suggested to my colleagues in the Congress Working Committee that the way forward would be to entrust a group of people with the task of beginning the search for a new President. I have empowered them to do so and committed my full support to this process and a smooth transition," he said.

Stating that he was born a Congressman, Rahul says "It is honour for me to serve Congress party, whose values and ideals have served as the lifeblood of our beautiful nation. This party has always been with me and is my life's blood and forever that way it shall remain."
On his insistence to quit as party chief, he says, "It is a habit in India that the powerful cling to power; we will not defeat our opponents without sacrificing desire for power."
On his political fight against the RSS and PM Modi, rahul writes "My fight was never simple battle for political power. I personally fought PM, RSS as I love India and the idea it was built upon. At times I stood completely alone in fight against PM and RSS, and am extremely proud of it."
"I personally fought the Prime Minister, the RSS and the institutions they have captured with all my being. I fought because I love India. And I fought to defend the ideals India was built upon. At times, I stood completely alone and am extremely proud of it. I have learned so much from the spirit and dedication of our workers and party members, men and women who have taught me about love and decency," he said.
Questioning the neutrality of institutions such as the Election Commission, Rahul said, "A free and fair election requires the neutrality of a country's institutions; an election cannot be fair without arbiters - a free press, an independent judiciary, and a transparent election commission that is objective and neutral. Nor can an election be free if one party has a complete monopoly on financial resources."
On the reasons for his party's humiliating defeat in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, Rahul says "We didn't fight a political party in the 2019 election. Rather, we fought the entire machinery of the Indian state, every institution of which was marshalled against the opposition. It is now crystal clear that our once cherished institutional neutrality no longer exists in India."
Reacting to Rahul's resignation, BJP said that unlike Congress, the
organisational structure is already in place
in the saffron party.
"In BJP, the (organisational) election and membership timetable is ready. Work has also started. We also have a working president. If nothing is happening in the other party, what can I do," Union minister Prakash Javadekar said after a briefing of the Cabinet when asked about Gandhi's resignation.
Earlier today, Rahul Gandhi had reiterated that he is no longer the Congress president and the party's working committee should meet immediately to decide on his successor.

Rahul told reporters he has already resigned and the Congress Working Committee should make the appointment soon.
"I am no longer the Congress president. I have already resigned. The CWC should convene a meeting immediately and decide on the new Congress president," Rahul had said when asked about the future course of the party.
