74 Satipati cult members arrested

Vadodara: The Panchmahal police arrested 74 tribal persons who had come to claim land near Godhra on Wednesday morning. The group was encouraged to take the land by members of the Satipati cult.

The Satipati cult believes that natural resources including land were their right and were handed over to them by Queen Victoria before Independence. The group does not believe in the present system of governance.On Wednesday morning, forest officials got information about some persons fencing an area in Daruniya forest near the Kaliyavav village of Godhra taluka. In an offence registered at the Godhra taluka police station, in-charge round forester R K Gadhvi has stated that after learning about the encroachment, he and five other personnel rushed to the spot. The offence alleges that members of the group abused forest officials and two forest department personnel suffered minor injuries when they were attacked. After reinforcements came, the forest department personnel managed to nab five persons from the spot even as others started running away.
Sources said that the Panchmahal police too rushed to the spot and nabbed more persons from the area. In all, 74 persons were held and later put under arrest by the police. Sharp and blunt weapons as well as documents and literature pertaining to the cult were also recovered from the site. Panchmahal superintendent of police Leena Patil said that the most members of the group were not from Panchmahal. She added that an amount of Rs 3,000 was also charged from those wishing to have land in the area.
