KOLHAPUR: Sunil Maruti Mane, a prisoner in Kalamba jail, who was allegedly
attacked by another inmate on Thursday, succumbed to his injuries on Monday morning.
Mane had been admitted to the ICU at Chhatrapati Pramilaraje Hosital after Parmeshwar Nanasaheb Jadhav allegedly hit him with a stone. His brother, Anil, has alleged that the
murder was a contract killing. He has submitted a separate application to the police in this regard.
Inspector Pramod Jadhav of the Juna Rajwada police station said that the legal proceeding to arrest the suspect has been initiated and further action would be taken as per the procedure. He said that the suspect would be arrested after permission of Solapur court as he was in judicial custody at the time of the incident. The police have registered an offence of attempt to murder against the suspect. They are completing legal procedures to register fresh offence of murder against him, police said.
The deceased was an accused in a rape case and was being held at the Kalamba jail on the orders of the Solapur court.
The murder suspect was booked under Maharashtra Control of Organized Crime Act (MCOCA). He was allegedly involved in serious crimes like murder, kidnapping and extortion. Mane was in Kalamba jail since March 2017 while Parmeshwar Jadhav was brought to the jail in December 2018. Preliminary investigation has found that Mane and the suspect often quarrelled. Police suspect that both of them had some previous enmity as they hail from Solapur district. Due to their frequent quarrelling, the jail authorities had kept them separately.
On Thursday, during the tea break, the suspect allegedly attacked Mane who was sleeping in his barrack. The doors of the barrack were opened to let the prisoners out for tea. Police said that the suspect allegedly picked up a stone from the yard and hit Mane with it. Soon after the attack, other jail mates alerted the authorities, following which Mane was rushed to the hospital. The seriously injured inmate had to undergo a surgery the same day. Police have recovered CCTV footage of the incident and have launched an investigation into the same.
