BJP Tamil Nadu chief asks party functionaries not to participate in TV debates

Tamilisai Soundararajan
CHENNAI: BJP Tamil Nadu state president Tamilisai Soundararajan on Tuesday issued a gag order, saying that party functionaries should not participate in television debates.
In a statement Tamilisai said party functionaries would not participate in TV debates as news channels had become biased in the recent past.
Minutes after Tamilisai issued the statement, party’s national secretary H Raja tweeted it.
Several state level leaders and functionaries have welcomed the move. “Most of the news channels are not giving equal opportunity for the representatives of our party to put forth our views. We are denied an opportunity to depend our (NDA) government’s initiative to streamline various schemes and development projects. So, most of the party functionaries are welcoming the state president’s decision,” said state IT wing president R Nirmal Kumar.

Executive member of the party Narayanan Thirupathy, who often represents the party in TV debates, also echoed the same and said that he would follow the state leadership’s decision.
BJP’s core committee pointed out the electronic media in TN as one of the major reasons for the party’s debacle in the Lok Sabha polls in Tamil Nadu. “The news channels played a major role in the poor show put up by BJP and its alliance parties in the election. They failed to carry unbiased news,” said a senior partymen.
