PUNE: The police on Tuesday booked three inmates of the
Yerawada Central Prison for alleged assault on an undertrial prisoner, Tushar Namdeo Hambir. The incident took place outside barrack number eight, in circle number one, at around 7.05 am.
Hambir, a suspect under the Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act (MCOCA), has sustained injuries on his head and neck. He is undergoing treatment at the Sassoon General Hospital. He is reported to be in stable condition.
As per the FIR lodged by a prison official, the accused Shahrukh alias Rashid Khan, Aman Riyaz Ansari and Salim Shabbir Shakh have been charged under sections 326 (voluntarily causing grievous hurts by dangerous weapons) and 34 (common intention) of the
Indian Penal Code (IPC).
U T Pawar, prison superintendent told TOI, “The barracks and cells of inmates were opened in the morning when three undertrial prisoners, armed with a stone and a nail attacked Hambir as soon as he walked out of the washroom. The attack came on the heels of a previous dispute between Hambir and the other three inmates.”
Sunil Ramanand, additional director general of police (prisons) told TOI, “An undertrial prisoner was bludgeoned to death in Kolhapur jail and a murder case was lodged last week. On Tuesday, another undertrial prisoner (Hambir) was attacked by fellow inmates inside Yerawada jail. I will visit the jails on Wednesday and take stock of the law and order situation. I will ensure that necessary measures are taken to prevent such incidents in future.”
