Around 850 000 people in the UK have dementia. Due to an ageing population, prevalence is forecast to increase to over 1 million people by 2025. The associated burden on patients, carers, and health-care systems has become an urgent priority to address. Research to investigate how technology might be able to reduce this burden and help people with dementia live at home is underway. Technology has been in use for the self-management of other diseases for some time (eg, devices that automatically monitor glucose and deliver insulin for patients with diabetes), but the role of technology in dementia care is now being fully explored in a new £20 million project.
