The Tamil Nadu Assembly on Monday witnessed debates related to the drinking water crisis, death of cattle due to drought and fodder shortage, short supply in provisions at fair price shops, transport strike and non-appointment of technical staff at government dialysis units.

Municipal Administration Minister SP Velumani said the actual rainfall for the year was only 48 mm against the average normal rainfall of 149 mm and said more private water tankers from Tiruvallur and Kancheepuram are roped in to meet the demand from online customers. Despite drought 525 mld is supplied and will be maintained till November 2019, the Minister informed the Assembly.
DMK MLA S Raghupathy informed the Assembly that the cattle are dying due to shortage of water and fodder. He also urged the food ministry to explore the option of providing cattle feed at the fair price shops. The DMK MLA also alleged that the ration shops were running out of stocks. Food Minister R Kamaraj denied that there was any major death of cattle and ruled out the possibility of providing cattle feed in fair price shops.
Former health minister Poongothai Aladi Aruna alleged that there are dialysis machines left unused in her Alangulam constituency. Health Minister C Vijaya Bhaskar in his reply said steps will be taken to recruit technicians for dialysis units.
Participating in the debate Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami attributed the water shortage due to deficit rainfall and dip in the water table in 24 districts of the state. The government is taking all efforts to provide water and is supplying 7,508 million litres per day and emphasised that the state has kickstarted the third desalination plant in Nemeli to meet the growing demand of Chennai.
