Nagpur: City police chief BK Upadhyay has taken a generous stance for disbursing funds to his colleagues for reasons ranging from medical emergencies to educational needs. Between August 2018 and May 2019, around 323 personnel collectively received Rs89.77 lakh through the welfare department.
The welfare fund, mostly used for construction and other activities, is also meant to help personnel in their hour of need. Petrol pumps started by the police department gave the welfare fund the much-needed financial boost.
Upadhyay’s biggest contribution was towards personnel who were in need of funds during medical emergencies. Around 93 cops received around Rs60.80 lakh as aid for medical requirements even when they underwent treatment at hospitals not listed in the police department’s insurance policy.
Senior PI Sandipan Pawar, who heads the welfare department, said the CP (Upadhyay) has made it a policy to ensure that no cops’ treatment is delayed or discontinued for want of funds. “We ensure that monetary help reaches needy personnel in minimum time with minimum paper work,” said Pawar.
TOI has learnt that nearly 117 family members of police personnel, especially their daughters, received Rs5,000 as motivational assistance for pursuing their educational goals. “Around 11 persons got monetary incentives amounting to Rs1.25 lakhs for higher education,” said Pawar.
Educational loans amounting to Rs15.3 lakh were approved for 31 students. “A personnel’s daughter is studying chemical engineering at IIT Gandhinagar while a few others are pursuing MBBS. Support through our welfare fund was also extended to these students,” said Pawar.
It has been learnt that after Upadhyay took over the reigns, he visited family members of cops who passed away and made monetary provisions for their last rites and other formalities.
