Red letter day for ’s 102-year-old GPO

Officials celebrate GPO’s 102nd anniversary in Patna on Monday
PATNA: The Patna General Post Office (GPO) completed 102 years of its existence on Monday. The day coincided with the fourth anniversary of Digital India initiative of the Centre.
Addressing a function, which was organised at the GPO to mark the twin celebrations, postmaster general Anil Kumar said, “The Patna GPO was established on July 1, 1917. The construction of its building had been started by the British government in 1912. It was around this period that colonial buildings like the Raj Bhavan, Patna University and Patna high court were constructed.”
Talking about the transformation of India Post due to Digital India, Kumar pointed out, “Digital India has helped bridge the gap between the urban and rural postal works. The extension of the postal department on online platforms has predominantly benefited small cities and villages. We have approximately 1,35,000 post offices in rural areas and all of them operate online.”
The postmaster general added, “We have facilities like QR cards and ATM cards, which enable customers to perform financial transactions and obtain information about their accounts from whatever place they want to.”

Patna postal service director Shankar Prasad claimed that people, availing postal services, could also register their complaints through the internet.
“Complaints can be registered in numerous ways. One can tweet it or register it anonymously through an automated complaint number,” Prasad said.
