Farmer kills self over financial stress, kids’ illness

KOTA: A 42-year-old farmer, who was under severe financial distress, hanged himself from a tree on his three-bigha land at Bhoat village under Mangrole police station in Baran district around 11pm on Monday. He was also going through mental stress due to the illnesses of two of his four children.
Though Hajarilal Gujjar did not leave any suicide note, preliminary investigations suggested that he was distressed over poor financial condition and illnesses of one of his sons and a daughter, Mangrole SHO Aashish Bhargav said.
This was the second suicide by a farmer in the district within nine days.
On June 22, Arjun Khandar (60), a distressed farmer of Radhapura village under Kishangang police station, had consumed poison. He died during treatment in Kota on June 26.
Gujjar owned a two-room kuchha house and three bigha of agriculture land which reportedly had not been yielding good crop for the last couple of years. To add to his woes, two of his four children were suffering from illness for a long time, Bhargav said.

Gujjar along with his elder brother Ramnarayan had availed a bank loan of Rs 1.97 lakh. Investigations, however, revealed that his brother had been repaying his monthly instalment of Rs 7,000, the SHO said.
Gujjar’s body was handed over to his family on Tuesday after autopsy. A case under Section 174 of CrPC was lodged to investigate the actual reason behind the extreme step by the farmer.
