MUMBAI: Tata Communications on Tuesday said that Vinod Kumar, MD and CEO, has resigned from the company citing personal reasons.
Kumar, 54, is the latest Tata CEO in the past two and a half years to quit well ahead of his tenure, which was to end on January 31, 2021. Anil Sardana (Tata Power), Rakesh Sarna (Indian Hotels) and Brotin Banerjee (Tata Housing) also quit much before the completion of their terms as CEOs from the respective companies.
Kumar, an electrical and electronic engineer from BITS, joined Tata Communications in April 2004, just when the company was embarking on an international growth journey. Kumar was closely associated with the purchases of Tyco Global Network and Teleglobe in 2004 and 2005. Sometime in 2011, he was appointed MD and CEO of Tata Communications.
Unlike other Tata CEOs like Puneet Chhatwal and Guenter Butschek, who functions from India, Kumar is based in Singapore. Kumar had joined Tata Communications from Asia Netcom, where he worked for two years. Under Kumar, Tata Communications recently sold the data centre business to STT GDC of Singapore to focus on digital infrastructure services.
His resignation, to be effective from the end of business on July 5, comes weeks ahead of Tata Communications annual shareholder meeting next month. Tata Communications (earlier VSNL) said that its board has initiated steps to identify Kumar’s successor and expects to finalise a suitable candidate at the earliest.
