    "The incident is not BMC failure. It happened because of heavy rainfall. There are several illegal constructions in Mumbai and the BMC has nothing to do with it. People are happy because of rainfall," said senior Shiv Sena leader Sanjay Raut.

  • 52 flights cancelled, 55 diverted due to heavy rainfall

    As many as 52 flights were cancelled and another 55 diverted to nearby airports due to the inclement weather and skidding of a SpiceJet aircraft at Mumbai airport late on July 1, an official said on July 2.

    Efforts are underway to remove the Boeing 737 aircraft from the runway and restore operations as early as possible, the official said.

    A city-bound SpiceJet flight from Jaipur carrying 167 passengers and crew overshot the runway at Mumbai airport on July 1 after landing amid heavy rains.

    The Boeing 737-800 aircraft is still stuck on the runway (09x27) and operations are being carried out from the secondary runway ( 14x32), the official said.

    "Efforts are underway to remove the aircraft from main runway to bay area," the official said, adding that it may take time to restore operations from the main runway as continuous rain is hampering the rescue ops.

  • Heavy rains in Thane, Palghar: 5 dead, 3 rescued from car

    Five persons died in rain-related incidents and three were rescued from a submerged car in Thane and adjoining Palghar as heavy rains in the region threw normal life out of gear. In a wall collapse in an Urdu school near Durgai Fort in Kalyan in the district, three people, including a toddler, were killed.

    In another incident, a car with three occupants fell into the Chenna Creek between Thane and Bhayander.

    Fire brigade personnel from Balkum rushed to the site and managed to rescue the persons from the submerged car, Thane Regional Disaster Management Cell chief Santosh Kadam said, adding that the car continued to remain stuck in the creek. (PTI)
