Man charged with murdering partner hours after return from holiday

Police have charged a man with murder after he was found with the body of his partner on Monday night at a house in Springfield Lakes, south-west of Brisbane.

The 59-year-old man, who is understood to have called paramedics, was arrested at the scene on Mountain Bell Lane, where the woman was found dead about 10pm.

Police would not comment on the 52-year-old's cause of death.

Detective Inspector David Briese said the couple had returned from a trip to south-east Asia hours before the woman died.

Both permanent residents of Australia, the pair had lived in the country for more than a decade and were not known to police.

"It appears they had been away from the country for a period of time, at least a month, in south-east Asia, and had only returned yesterday afternoon," he said.

Inspector Briese said it was believed the woman was found within an hour of her death.

The man was scheduled to appear in the Ipswich Magistrates Court on Wednesday.

Earlier on Tuesday, Inspector Briese said detectives spoke with family, friends and neighbours while forensic officers worked at the crime scene.

"Investigators and forensic officers will remain there until we’re satisfied that we have pieced as much of what has occurred last night together," he said.

An incident command room was established at Yamanto Police Station and Inspector Briese urged the public there was no cause for alarm.

“We don’t believe the public has anything to fear as a result of the incident at this time," he said.
