The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) had put 'dangerous tree' warning signs on 10,000 trees, which ran the risk of falling due to heavy rains. Written on white paper and merely pasted on these trees, the posters have simply got washed away during the first rains of the city.

The BMC had put up the posters to distinguish between the dangerous and non-dangerous trees. Generally, during monsoon there are several cases of branches and sometimes even trees falling on people. This initiative aimed at protecting citizens from such cases. Last month, the BMC had put these warning posters in places where the number of dangerous trees are more such as Matunga, King's Circle, Wadala, Aarey Colony, etc.

The highest number of dangerous trees are in the Matunga area. "If the BMC puts up these posters made of paper, they are bound to get washed away during rains. They should put up plastic or metal signboards so that they do not get destroyed due to rains, and people would be able to distinguish between dangerous and safe trees," a resident of Matunga said.

Of the 10,000 posters, 5,000 were written in English and the rest in Marathi. According to statistics and previous reports, the highest number of deaths caused by tree falling incidents occurred in 2015 where nine deaths were reported. Subsequently, three, four and seven cases were reported in 2016, 2017 and 2018, respectively.
