KOLKATA: Calcutta University has asked its affiliated colleges to immediately reopen the admission portal and fill-up the vacancies within July 10. This, however, has come as a surprise to many college principals who pointed out that the exact scenario of vacancies will be available only after the counselling for Presidency University, Jadavpur University and West Bengal Joint Entrance Examination Board is over. The college heads fear that despite instructions from the higher education department to fill-up all seats, several vacancies will remain if they are forced to complete the second round of admissions within July 10.

The principal of a prominent central Kolkata girls’ college said, “we will begin our verification and classes for first-year students in undergraduate programs on Tuesday. The second round of verification and classes will commence from July 8. We will start getting a better picture from July 9 onwards. However, the exact number of vacancies will be available only after the other counselling are over. Thus, only if CU closes the second round of application process after the counselling of the above-mentioned programs, can the colleges benefit from the process.”

Another senior college principal added, “there was no time-frame in the notice issued by the state government. Now, by mentioning a cut-off date at the earliest, CU is unnecessarily complicating the matter.” He added, “hopefully, CU will extend the deadline for the second round of applications process to be over. To de-reserve, the reserve category seats into general ones will also considerable time. In most prominent colleges, reserved category seats are lying vacant.”

On Monday, several colleges across the city affiliated to CU have started their verification process as the scheduled dates for commencing first-year classes for undergraduate programs approach. With the state higher education department giving a go-ahead to the varsities to reopen the entrance portal for the second round of admissions to fill-up vacant seats, many of the prominent colleges are waiting to exhaust their published merit list in order to get an exact estimate of vacancies.

In Surendranath College only 1300 seats were filled-up through the online application. The college offers more than 2400 seats. “Among the 1300 seats, on Monday – as we started our verification process, more than 700 students have turned up,” said principal Indranil Kar. He added, “only after exhausting the merit list which comprises of all candidates who have applied, we can reopen the portal.”

At Bethune College, out of 557 seats in 16 honours courses, around 100 seats are likely to remain vacant. The college is beginning the verification process from July 5. “We will get the estimates and then reopen admission websites after July 6,” said a college official. Bethune College will also request for conversion of reserved seats into general ones after July 6. “We will only be in a position to reopen admissions thereafter,” said another college authority.

Another renowned college on Park Street said that it is not possible to get an estimate unless the reserved seats are converted into general ones. “We will reopen the admission portal to fill up only around 50 vacancies which are left,” he said.
