3 cops booked after accused escapes from police custody

Ludhiana: Two assistant sub-inspectors (ASIs) and one home guard of Jagraon police have been booked after an accused escaped from their custody on Saturday. The cops came to the city along with the accused for recovery in a cheating case. However, the accused managed to escape with handcuffs.
On the complaint of inspector Nidhan Singh of Jagraon police, Haibowal police have registered a case against accused Nitesh Jain of Durgapuri, Haibowal (who escaped from police custody), ASIs Darshan Singh and Gurmeet Singh, and home guard Jagtar Singh. Complainant inspector Nidhan Singh said the Jagraon police had arrested Nitesh Jain (24) on June 27 in a case of Section 420 (cheating) of the IPC. The accused duped a Jagraon-based jeweller Hitendar Kanda of three gold rings on June 24.
“Jain made an order of three rings over phone for a retirement party. Jain claimed to be an employee of SBI, Jagraon. He asked Kanda to make a delivery to his driver standing outside the bank and to get payment from him inside the bank. Once Kanda made the delivery, Jain asked him to wait inside the bank, and later switched his phone off. The driver took the parcel to Ludhiana and further gave it to the worker of home delivery service provider near PAU as told by Jain. Later, police identified that the car driver was also hired by Jain just for a parcel delivery. In this case, Nitesh was arrested by June 27,” he added.

“Two gold rings were recovered from Jain when he was arrested, while for recovery of another ring, he was being taken to Haibowal Kalan of Ludhiana city. However, in the market, Nitesh managed to divert the attention of cops and escaped,” said the inspector.
Investigating officer ASI Gian Singh of Haibowal police station said a case had been registered against Nitesh and three cops under sections 223 (escape from confinement or custody negligently suffered by public servant), and 224 (resistance or obstruction by a person to his lawful apprehension) of the IPC. A further picture of accused Nitesh Jain is being circulated to arrest him, said the ASI.
