Tribunal awards ₹16.15 lakh to accident victim’s family

The Motor Accidents Claims Tribunal, Chennai, awarded a compensation of ₹16.15 lakh to the family of Kathirvel, a 50-year-old construction supervisor who died in a road accident in 2014.

According to the petition by his family, on October 14, 2014, Kathirvel was walking along the Maduravoil Alapakkam Road when a lorry hit him. He sustained injuries and died on the way to hospital.

The petition was filed by Kathirvel’s wife Renuka, sons Elumalai and Vinoth and mother Vishalakshmi.

The tribunal ruled that the victim lost his life due to fatal injuries sustained in the road accident.

It ruled that the family was entitled to ₹14.15 lakh under the loss of dependency component.

Of the total compensation, the wife would get ₹7 lakh and the sons were entitled to ₹3.5 lakh each, it said. The mother of the deceased would get ₹2,15,700, it added.

The compensation is payable with interest at 7.5% per annum, from the date of numbering of the petition on January 20, 2015, till the date of realisation with costs. The tribunal directed Reliance Insurance Company Ltd., the vehicle insurer, to pay the compensation.
