Much ado about a Tasmac shop

Coimbatore: The collectorate on Monday saw two groups of residents from Jambukandi, who had opposing views about the local Tasmac shop.
While a group of tribals said that the liquor outlet should be shut down, another group maintained that the shop should remain open. Strangely, the men and women demanding the continued operation of the shop were clueless on why they wanted the outlet to remain open.
A large group of tribals from Jambukandi led by Ramesh, whose wife had died last week after knocked down by an inebriated motorist coming out of the Tasmac shop, had turned up at the collectorate to attend the grievance petition meet. They demanded that the outlet, just off the Coimbatore-Anaikatti Road, be shut down permanently. Ramesh was joined by groups including the People's Union for Civil Liberties, advocates wing, Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi, Thanthai Periyar Dravidar Kazhagam, among others.

After a few hours, another group consisting of 30 people arrived, demanding that the outlet should remain open. While the group’s leader, Balaji, claimed that the shop has to remain open as it will stop the sale of liquor in the black market, his supporters seemed clueless. When a reporter asked the women accompanying him why they wanted the liquor shop open, one of them said, “What are you asking? It should be closed.”
“Why you asking us about Tasmac? We were called here for a meeting with the collector. We thought we could ask for some sops?” quipped another woman.
