A radioactive device had gone missing from Chakan — following an accident three days ago, unleashing a wave of uncertainty among officials. The cops were quick to issue an advisory over this misplaced object given the threat it may pose to a layman, had he/she come in contact with this harmful object. Pune Mirror first published the report that highlighted the warning on June 27. Four days later, the cops received communication from a local, pointing to the whereabouts of the device after which it was recovered.
The gadget has been described by the manufacturer as ‘compact industrial radiographic exposure device’ which is ‘used for industrial applications of gammaradiography to inspect materials and structures’. It was assumed to be “stolen” after an accident involving three employees of the Navi Mumbai-based manufacturer, Radiago Work Solutions Pvt Ltd. All three were killed at Bhose, a village near Chakan. Immediately, the police issued a viral notice, asking citizens to return the device if found “without meddling with it”.
Pasalkar said that the call followed Mirror’s June 27 report. When they approched the firm’s officials, they arrived at the spot to verify the device.
The recovered model — Delta 880 — which has a yellow handle and costs Rs 6 lakh. Pasalkar informed that the gadget is used for industrial purposes only and any mishandling would cause direct harm to a person’s white blood cells. In an unfortunate situation, it could have even exploded had it been opened. “Now that it has been handed over to them, it is their responsibility to produce it in the court,” he added.
Sharad Sharamane, radiologist safety officer, confirmed that the device was indeed handed over to them. “It is used for industrial applications of gamma radiography to inspect materials and structures. We have given a statement to the police saying that the gadget is not sold and since we do not want any changes in it, I will keep it safe with me,” he said, further promising that he will not sell or hand it over any further. Sharamane has also said he would inform the cops from time to time about the device’s status.
The cops have filed a case under Section 397 (robbery, or dacoity, with an attempt to cause death or grievous hurt) of theIndian Penal Code .
