A freak hailstorm hit western Mexico on Sunday, burying the city of Guadalajara under 1.5m of ice, according to CNN.

Jalisco Governor Enrique Alfaro Ramírez reportedly said that he had never witnessed such heavy hail in the area around the capital of Guadalajara, The Sun reports.

"I went there to evaluate the situation and I witnessed scenes which I had never seen before: Hail accumulation more than a metre high, and then we wonder if climate change exists," Ramírez said.

No records show any hailstorms as powerful as this, despite the area experiencing seasonal hailstorms.

At least six neighbourhoods in the outskirts of the city were deeply affected by the hailstorm, reported The Guardian.

Heavy machinery was being used to clear the roads, as nearly 200 houses and businesses were reportedly damaged and at least 50 vehicles were swept away. The Telegraph reported no casualties during the storm.
