MC gives one week to dairy owners for proper waste disposal

Ludhiana: For curbing the direct discharge of waste going into Buddha Nullah from dairy units at Tajpur Road, civic authorities have given seven days to owners of dairies to make suitable arrangements for the waste. If they fail to make arrangements, their dairies will be sealed. On Sunday, MC commissioner KP Brar, other civic officials, and Punjab Pollution Control Board (PPCB) officials visited dairy units for inspecting their way of disposing of the cow dung.
Already, the civic body has issued notices to more than 160 dairy units on Tajpur Road. The units have been given a clear direction to construct separate tanks from where only water should go into the sewerage system, and cow dung should remain only in the tanks. Nobody will be allowed to throw cow dung in Buddha Nullah.
After inspection, the officials revealed that only nine dairy owners had constructed these tanks so far, and cow dung was also going into the sewerage system or in Buddha Nullah. The members of Dairy Owners’ Association were also called at the spot and given technical knowledge about the required system. The PPCB served notices to almost 24 dairy units outside the MC limits for polluting Buddha Nullah. These dairy units are already under the scanner, as members of the Special Task Force (STF) framed for rejuvenation of Buddha Nullah have clearly directed civic officials to take some steps to curb this pollution in the drain.
Meanwhile, the dairy owners have assured full support to MC, but they are demanding some technique with which they could solve this problem on a permanent basis. The president of Tajpur Road dairy complex DS Oberoi said they were ready to take every step to end this problem, but civic officials should also play their role. He demanded MC to first construct the effluent treatment plant (ETP) at Tajpur Road, which was proposed a long ago.
Brar said: “Dairy owners will have to arrange a system for properly disposing of the waste, and for that, they are being given seven days. We will do the sealing if they do not take any action.”

CCTV CAMERAS FOR DUMP SITE
In order to keep an eye whether compost and reduced derived fuel (RDF) plants are functional, MC commissioner Brar has asked A2Z waste management company to get five CCTV cameras at Tajpur Road dump. She visited the dump on Sunday, and showed dissatisfaction with garbage management. Since there were huge mountains of garbage at the dump site during summer, many fire incidents also took place, and the PPCB also served notice to MC. The staff of A2Z company have been instructed to ensure that garbage deposited in the city should be lifted in time, and the plant should be operational for making fertilizer from waste.
