Vadodara: Commuters accelerating in different areas of the city had to end up paying penalty for over-speeding on Monday. The traffic police penalized 105 commuters for over-speeding on the Akota-Dandia Bazaar Road, Sardar Estate Crossroads and Harni Crossroads where police teams were deployed since morning.
“Commuters are seen driving at high speed on these roads so we decided to start our drive from there. Our team consisting of a police sub-inspector (PSI) and six constables was deployed first at Akota-Dandia Bazaar Road and then in Harni and Sardar Estate Crossroads,” said Amita Vanani, ACP (traffic) who added that the drive has been initiated on the instructions of city police commissioner Anupam Singh Gahlaut.
The cops collected Rs 42,000 penalty from the over-speeding commuters. The speed limit for light vehicles is 40 km per hour on this stretch while that for heavy vehicles is 30 kilometres per hour.
The speed-gun that was tested few times before being used on Monday detects the vehicles that cross the speed limit and also clicks photographs of the driver with the help of laser system. A picture of the license plate and another of the person riding the vehicle is generated.
By the time the driver reaches Dandia Bazaar roads, a challan is automatically generated with the photographs. The driver is then asked to pay the penalty on the spot.
When asked about the speed limit boards to inform the commuters, Vanani said that they have written to the Vadodara Municipal Corporation (VMC) for installing the boards. “There are many old notifications regarding the speed limits but now the police will issue fresh notifications regarding speed limits in different areas,” Vanani told TOI.
