Over 50% girls register for IIM-S admission this year

Sambalpur: From not a single girl taking admission last year, the Indian Institute of Management, Sambalpur (IIM-S) has managed to get over 50% girl students this time. Of the 95 students registered for admission by Monday afternoon, 52 are girls. The B-School held the commencement ceremony of its fifth batch on Monday.
Mahadeo Jaiswal, director of the institution, said, “The number of girls taking admission in IIM-S is the highest among the IIMs in the country. Proper communication about the institution, its growing reputation, good placement record, among others, helped attract girls students to this institution.”
Admission to the 120 seats of the college is open till July 6.
“Many people held the impression that Sambalpur is not a suitable location for an IIM. In view of this, we made consistent efforts to disseminate proper information about IIM-S and its location over the last few years. As a result, many girls have taken admission this time,” Jaiswal said.
He added that the relaxation of cut-off marks for girl students seeking admission into the institute is also another reason behind the sharp rise in their number.
While the cult-off marks for male students for admission into the IIM-S is 95%, it is 90% for girl students, he said.
Samrudhi Kangude, who has registered herself for admission in IIM-S after completing her graduation in Economics from Fergusson College in Pune, said, “The placement record of IIM-S for the last three years is outstanding. The faculty is also very good. So I decided to join IIM-S.” Though Samrudhi said she received a call from IIM Indore too, she chose to study at IIM Sambalpur.

The new students of IIM-S were addressed by P Raghavendran, president of refinery business, Reliance Industries Limited; Deepak Behera, vice-chancellor of Sambalpur University and Mahadeo Jaiswal on the inaugural day of the orientation program on Monday.
The IIM-S also launched a PhD programme from this academic session in which four students have already enrolled themselves.
