Delhi peak power demand reaches 7,241 MW, highest ever

DELHI: Delhi’s peak power demand has broken all previous records and touched 7,241 MW at 3.29pm on Monday – the highest ever recorded in the history of the city. It broke the previous record of 7,016 MW recorded on July 10, 2018.
Discoms, however, expect Delhi’s peak power demand during the summers of 2019 to reach 7,400 MW - an increase of over 250% over the peak power demand of 2,879 MW in 2002.
On their part, BRPL and BYPL successfully met all-time high peak power demands of 3,132 MW and 1,629 MW in their respective areas. Last year, peak power demand had clocked 3,081 MW and 1,561 MW in the respective area of BRPL and BYPL.
Tata Power Delhi Distribution (Tata Power-DDL) also successfully met the record peak power demand of 2,014 MW without any network constraint and power outage. Last year, the highest peak demand registered in Tata Power-DDL’s area was 1,967 MW and in overall Delhi it was 7,016 MW.
Delhi’s power demand crossed the 6,000 MW for the first time in 2016 (6,216 MW on July 1). In June 2019, Delhi’s peak power demand crossed 6,000 MW on 24 days. The fact that the city’s power demand is consistently crossing the 6,000 MW shows the robustness of the capital’s distribution and transmission system, which has been able to measure up, a discom official said.
Delhi’s peak power demand is substantially more than that of several cities and states. It is more than the power demand of Mumbai and Chennai put together and thrice of that of Kolkata.

According to experts, cooling load is the main reason factor behind the increase in Delhi’s power load.
“In fact, according to estimates, almost around 50% of Delhi’s power demand in summers is because of the cooling load (ACs + cooolers + fans),” a discom official said.
