Amid rain, 2 planes veer off runway

NEW DELHI: Two aircrafts veered off — one on the runway and the other on the taxiway — after landing in heavy rain on Sunday. While a SpiceJet plane overshot the runway in Surat, an Air India Express flight veered off the taxiway in Mangalore. Luckily, in both cases, no one was injured.
Confirming this, a SpiceJet spokesman said a Q400 aircraft from Bhopal to Surat “overshot the runway after landing”.

“Passengers were deplaned normally,” the spokesman said. Before this incident, an Air India Express’s Dubai-Mangalore flight with 183 passengers on board went off the taxiway after landing. The Boeing 737’s nose got stuck in kutcha ground and passengers safely disembarked from the plane. The airline has ordered a probe and informed the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) about the incident.
An airline spokesman said: “AI Express aircraft went off the taxiway into soft ground after landing . (This happened) While vacating the runway to the right side. Tailwind and wet runway with inadequate braking action was reported. All passengers and crew are safe.” “The plane did not overshoot the runway. It overshot while vacating the runway to enter a taxiway,” said an official.
