CHENNAI: R Seethalakhsmi on Monday took charge as collector of
Chennai district. Seethalakhsmi, who is the 71st collector of Chennai, succeeds A Shanmuga Sundaram, who has been posted as the Vellore district collector.
Previously, Seethalakshmi was the registrar of the Tamil Nadu Music and Fine Arts University. Her appointment comes close on the heels of the district administration giving the nod for acquisition of late chief minister J
Jayalalithaa's residence at Poes Garden for converting into a memorial.
Last year, the city was expanded on a par with the size of the Greater Chennai Corporation -- from 176 square km to 426 square km --- covering 122 revenue villages in 16 taluks.
The Chennai district collectorate handles issues related to revenue, recommendation for citizenship, alteration of date of birth, legal heir certificates and implementation of schemes by the adi-dravidar and tribal, backward classes and minorities welfare departments.
