Telangana: 2.44 lakh vacant degree seats after final phase of admissions

HYDERABAD: Over 1.41 lakh students were allotted seats in various degree courses through the degree online services Telangana (DOST), which concluded its final phase on Saturday evening.
According to figures shared by the Telangana State Council of Higher Education (TSCHE), total 42,468 seats were allotted seats in the final phase, leaving a whopping 2.44 lakh seats vacant. The data indicated that 36,910 fresh seats were allotted in the third phase and 5,558 students secured better seats than those allotted to them in the previous phases. Almost 270 students were allotted seats in government degree colleges within opted district and course and 4,304 students were not allotted any seat due to insufficient options exercised by them.
"Students have to report to their allotted colleges from July 1 to July 4 to confirm their admission. If students fail to confirm their admission, they will have to forego the seat," said R Limbadri, DOST convenor.
In all the last two phases, as many as 99,035 students confirmed their seats.While 2.44 lakh seats have gone vacant, college managements are hopeful that the TSCHE will conduct another phase for those who fail to secure a seat in the engineering, agriculture and pharmacy. Although the exercising of web-options for engineering, agriculture and pharmacy was scheduled to commence from July 1, the commissionerate of technical education further extended it to July 5 in view of the fee structure issue.
"Considering that students will be able to exercise their web-options for engineering, agriculture and pharmacy courses only from July 5, the TSCHE should conduct another phase for degree courses for those who fail to secure a seat in professional courses," said principal of a degree college.
Colleges are also hopeful that the TSCHE will allow spot admissions for degree seats which go vacant even after conclusion of all phases.
The Telangana Admission and Fee Regulatory Committee (TAFRC) has also scheduled personal hearing of professional colleges from Monday. Representatives of 20 engineering colleges including Gokaraju Rangaraju Institute of Engineering and Technology, CVR College of Engineering, Chaitanya Bharathi Institute of Technology, Vasavi College of Engineering among others have been called for a personal hearing on Monday.
