HUBBALLI: A mock exercise on flood disaster management was conducted by the
National Disaster Response Force in association with the staff of the fire and emergency, forest, taluk and district administration on the banks of
Unkal Lake in the city on Saturday.
The mock exercise and awareness programme was organised by 20 members of the 10th battalion of
NDRF.
A flood-like situation was created at Unkal lake after which the team rescued those who were who stuck in the flood. The rescue efforts of the NDRF men enthralled the audience who received first-hand information on precautions and methods to follow when they get stuck in such a situation
Subash Mahala, inspector of the 10th battalion of NDRF, said the aim of the mock drill was to give information to the public on how to respond when they stuck in a flood situation.
The NDRF personnel gave information on how those who do not know to swim can use thermocol or plastic to rescue themselves in a flood.
They also gave a practical demonstration of search and rescue operations during floods. The aim of this exercise was to evaluate the emergency response plans and make coordination among various agencies at the time of crisis.
Hundreds of students and civilians took part in the mock exercise. Due to heavy rain, the drill was stopped after a few demonstrations.
Students and teachers of several school interacted with NDRF personnel and got first hand information about disaster management.
