Last rites of six-year-old in Haryana village today

KURUKSHETRA: The last rites of the 6-year-old Gurupreet Kaur, who died due to heat stroke in an Arizona desert while entering the United States with her mother, will be performed on Sunday at her native village Haryana's Kurukshetra district.
Her parents, who are in New York, held her funeral in Richmond Hill gurdwara on Thursday. Gurupreet's father, who is 33 years old, left home for the United States in 2013 when she was just six months old.
"I am a farmer and not aware about how my children have managed to make arrangements to settle in USA," Gurupreet's grandfather, who requested anonymity, told TOI. He has not seen his son since 2013, when he left home.
The newspaper is not making public the names of Gurupreet's parents and her grandparents.
"When I came to know about the demise of my granddaughter, I felt shocked. We have kept Akhand Path to perform her last rites and her antim ardas will be held on Sunday," her grandfather said.
"After Gurupreet's father left for abroad in 2013, his wife had been living with Gurupreet here," the elderly man said.

Gurupreet's mother, 27, took the risky route to reach the US to reunite with her husband as both had not seen each other since 2013.
"We are unaware about how Gurupreet's father managed to settle in USA as he made all the arrangements by himself. Also his wife, who is a graduate, followed the similar way and she also made arrangements for herself to reach USA," the family living in the Kurukshetra village said.
