HAZARIBAG/RANCHI: Dilip Kumar Ravidas, a 30-year-old mukhiya of Lupung panchayat in Katkamsandi block of Hazaribag, couldn’t believe his ears when Prime Minister Narendra Modi mentioned him during the ‘Mann Ki Baat’ programme on Sunday.
In his first ‘Mann Ki Baat’ address after the Lok Sabha elections, Modi stressed on water conservation. He hailed the efforts of a few, including Ravidas, for their contribution to conserve water.
Speaking to TOI after the programme, Ravidas said he had received a letter addressed to him from the prime minister on June 22, where Modi praised his efforts to promote jal sanrakshan (water conservation) in his panchayat.
“But when I heard the PM’s programme on Sunday, I still could not believe my ears,” Ravidas remarked. On their initiative, he said, “Considering the raging issue of water crisis everywhere, I initiated the soakpit project. It is a simple concept to systematically channel waste water into the ground by creating pits. This also helps in preventing issues such as unwanted water logging. People have slowly started adopting this idea in our panchayat.” When asked how he got the idea of having soak pits, Ravidas said, “It struck me while watching a programme on TV. It was said that soak pits can increase underground water table in the long run. They also require minimal investment. After that, I started creating awareness through gram sabha meetings.” The young mukhiya further informed that they have been able to dig 50 soak pits in the last couple of months. Enthused by the PM’s pat, the village has decided to lay more soak pits from Monday onwards. “We have now decided to dig soak pits at all sites such as school buildings, market places, handpumps and so on. PM’s appreciation has inspired the whole village,” Ravidas said.

Water conservation campaign from July 7 Meanwhile, CM Raghubar Das announced that from July 7, the state government will launch a massive drive for water conservation across the state and requested the people to join the campaign to make it a mass movement.
