Mumbai: BMC invites objections, suggestions for tree removal at Aarey Colony

MUMBAI: Just a day after the Bombay high court lifted the stay on the functioning of the Tree Authority, the BMC issued a notice informing about a proposal to cut/transplant trees in Aarey Colony that are obstructing the construction of the Metro Line III car shed.
It has invited objections/suggestions from the public and the last date for submission is July 8 and the public hearing will be held on that day at the MMRDA office auditorium at BKC.

The notice, however, does not mention the number of trees to be cut/transplanted. The BMC website mentions that the applicant Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation Limited that is executing the Metro Line III project had asked for permission for cutting 2,238 trees and transplanting 464 trees. Since January the BMC has issued notices for removal of 5,245 trees across the city.
The functioning of the Tree Authority had been stayed after a PIL was filed questioning its functioning without any tree experts. So far the BMC has appointed five experts though the court had sought that the BMC appoint experts equal to the number of corporators nominated. There are 14 corporators on the Tree Authority. Tree experts also have voting rights as per the Tree Act.
