Thiruvananthapuram: Housing and Urban Development Corporation (Hudco) has allotted Rs 375 crore more for the
Life Mission project aimed at providing homes for homeless people of the state. This is the fourth instalment of Rs 4,000 crore loan which
Hudco has committed for the project. The latest instalment will be used to pay beneficiaries who have started construction of house in the second phase of Life Mission, said local self-government minister A C Moideen.
Hudco’s assistance would enable construction of 1.84 lakh houses in the state. The beneficiaries of the project are provided assistance in instalment after reviewing the progress of house construction. With the release of latest instalment, Hudco has so far sanctioned Rs 1,500 crore for the project.
According to an official with LSG minister’s office, the government has so far sanctioned Rs 3,041 crore for the second phase of Life Mission. This includes Rs 716 crore allotted by local bodies and Rs 425 crore allotted by the state government.
The Life Mission, which is part of the Nava Keralam mission taken up by the LDF government, has been conceived as a three-phase project. In the first phase, assistance was given to those beneficiaries who had started construction of houses but had to abandon the work midway. In the first phase, 54,446 families benefited from the project and over 50,000 half-built houses have been completed by now.
In the second phase, fund was allotted to construct house for those beneficiaries who owned land but couldn’t construct houses. The third phase of the project has recently been launched and the government aims to provide land and house for people who don’t own land at all. In the third phase, construction of 217 houses has been complete in Idukki. A 7-storey apartment complex with 217 flats was constructed at Machiplavu in Adimali. Each apartment measuring 460 sq ft has two bed rooms, a hall and kitchen. The plan is to construct similar housing complexes in other districts too in the third phase.
