No more student on AU campus, student council to replace 96 year union

ALLAHABAD: The 96 years old Allahabad University Students’ Union ceased to exist from Saturday as the Executive Council (EC) of Allahabad University granted approval to the Academic Council (AC) recommendation of replacing it with student council, and the registrar issued a notification to this effect.

As a result, students’ union elections would not be held at AU, CMP degree college, Iswar Saran degree college and Shyama Prasad Mukherjee degree college now.

Earlier in the day, the executive council held its meeting and discussed all the recommendations of academic council, including the decision of replacing the students’ union with student council, and gave its approval.

Later, AU registrar, Prof N K Shukla, issued a notification stating, ‘Pursuant to the AC resolution number 10/36, with effect from the session 2019-20, there would be student council in place of students’ union by direct voting by the students of AU’. The notification stated that students’ union of AU, as well as all of its constituent colleges would be replaced by student council.

AU public relation officer (PRO), Chitranjan Kumar said, “AU would now follow the model of student council in place of traditional students’ union. The university would like to clarify that it is not banning student representation, only the mode of electing the office-bearers has been changed.”

The recommendation of Lyngdoh committee (clause 6.1.2 and 6.2.1) also specify that direct elections are best suited for universities and institutions of small campuses and that student council should be preferred for large universities with multi-campus and large number of students.

“Even the Allahabad High Court, in its order dated May 17, this year, had asked us to conduct elections following the guidelines of the Lyngdoh committee. We are only abiding by the orders,” the PRO said.

Since several years, students’ union had become a centre of murders, indiscipline and chaos and several student leaders are behind the bars for criminal activities. “In these circumstances, student council would end such unscrupulous activities and would curb use of money and muscle power on campus,” Kumar added.

He explained that in student council model, elections would be held course-wise in each faculty and elected students would constitute the electoral college, which would then elect the main office bearers of student council from among themselves.

Meanwhile, police detained around a dozen protesting student leaders when they tried to move towards the law faculty to disrupt the EC meeting.
