THANE: An undertrial was booked for allegedly hurling a slipper at a district judge in the court room during a hearing on Friday.
Police said Ganesh Gaikwad, accused in a murder case registered at Vashi police station, had been lodged at Thane Central jail for several months. On Friday, he was taken to court for a hearing of the case at district judge Rajesh Gupta's court. He was presented before the judge by constables and other staff escorted him to the court room.
Around 3pm, the judge called him and asked him about his counsel, to which the undertrial stated that the judge had given him a counsel who was absent. The judge told him that he would give him a new counsel to start proceedings, which did not go well with Gaikwad. In a fit of rage, he pulled out his chappal and flung it at the judge. When the judge ducked, the accused started abusing him. Staff took him out of court room, where he kept shouting , said a police officer.

Mangesh Sawant, senior inspector of Thane Nagar police station, told TOI, "The accused was possibly frustrated that he was not getting bail. We shall soon seek his custody from the designated court for a further probe, after which the reason could be ascertained."
Soon after the incident, the accused was sent back to the jail. An offence has been registered by Thane Nagar police under sections 353 and 504 of Indian Penal Code.
