KOLKATA: An overcast sky through the day, with heavier clouds engulfing Kolkata by evening and spells of rain here and there, the
monsoon rains are finally here, eight days after the Met office announced the arrival of southwest monsoon. The Met office expects some heavy spells of shower in the city between Sunday and Monday. The next three to four days will see good rainfall activity.
Dark clouds pushed up by a cyclonic circulation over the northern Bay of Bengal reached the city skies on Saturday. This weather system is likely to transform into a low pressure area by Sunday and start inching towards the land. Met office sees this system to further intensify into a depression later.
“The chances of low pressure system concentrating into a depression are high. In that case, this will be the first depression this monsoon. That is the reason we are expecting good rain activity in the next few days, may be till Tuesday,” said GK Das, director (weather) at Regional Meteorological Centre, Kolkata.
“Apart from Kolkata, South and North 24 Parganas, Howrah, Hooghly, Jhargram and East and West Midnapore too will get some heavy showers on Sunday and Monday. The sky will remain gloomy for now,” he added.
This year monsoon had arrived in the city on June 21, delayed by about 11 days. Despite its arrival there has been not much rain. According to weather scientists, monsoon rain has to be triggered by significant weather systems like either a low pressure area or depression. But in absence of any such system developing over the region, the city has been high and dry all these days.
