Rs 1 crore fine: Noida to present ‘facts’ before Central Pollution Control Board

NOIDA: A day after the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) levied a fine of Rs 1 crore on the Noida Authority for violations of sewage treatment plant (STP) effluents citing 64 million litres per day (MLD) untreated sewage being discharged into Kondli drain, the Noida Authority maintains that it will submit its plea with full facts and figures, and request CPCB to consider them.

The CPCB order, dated June 6, on the petition filed by Abhisht Kusum Gupta maintained that 30 drains in the city have been discharging untreated waste water in Kondli drain and contributing to its organic and hydraulic loading.
The order also maintained that estimated sewage generation of Noida is 216 MLD, whereas its installed total capacity is 231 MLD with actual capacity utilisation being 152 MLD.
When contacted Authority CEO Alok Tandon, he told TOI, “Noida would submit actual utilisation of STPs to CPCB and show that their utilisation is around 200 MLD and not 152 MLD, as mentioned in the order. We would request the CPCB to hear our plea by placing facts regarding utilisation of STPs before them.”
Rajeev Tyagi, general manager at the Noida Authority maintained that the Authority has full capacity to treat 200 MLD as against 152 MLD mentioned in the order.
“There seems to be some discrepancy in the figures. We have optimum capacity of 231 MLD to treat waste. Out of this, we are treating 200 MLD, which fluctuates depending on supply conditions and rains. Hence there’s no untreated waste generated in Noida,” said Tyagi.
Tyagi further adds that all pollutants in Noida come from Delhi and Noida does not generate any untreated waste of its own. “We would like to place our case before honourable CPCB which will be based on facts and figures and request that our plea be heard,” said Tyagi adding that Authority is willing for a joint inspection on the matter.
