Funds being used for water schemes in Krishnagiri district

Funds to the tune of ₹45 lakh is being used for drinking water schemes in the district, Health Secretary and the District Monitoring Officer Beela Rajesh said here on Thursday.

The Health Secretary along with District Collector S. Prabhakar reviewed water scarcity faced by the district.

The Municipality has a population of over 70,000 with a daily water requirement of 8 MLD. The water is being supplied through the Hogenakkal pipelines and through the Thenpennai water supply scheme. Similarly, the six town panchayats demand a water requirement of 7 MLD for a population of 1.5 lakh people. The 10 panchayat unions with 333 panchayats with a population of 14.65 lakh people requires 51 MLD of water.

Speaking to reporters, Ms. Beela Rajesh said the shortfall in rain by 56% last year has led to lowering of water reserves by 70%. This had affected farmers to a large extent. A proper enumeration of the affected areas will be done and efforts will be made to ensure irrigation to enable cropping this season.

As of date, 291 complaints have been received by the control room set up to address the complaints of water supply and distribution.

Earlier, Ms. Rajesh inspected the primary health centres in Shoolagiri, Melumalai, the Government Hospital in Hosur. The Health Secretary enquired with the patients of the health infrastructure and also about the availability of water and arrangements for sanitation arrangements in the hospital.

Ms. Rajesh also inspected the works on the 10 lakh litre capacity over head water tank at Sennathur in Hosur Corporation here at a cost of ₹50 lakh. She also inspected the over head tank of 60,000 litre capacity being set up at Koneripally in Shoolagiri here at a cost of ₹13 lakh.
