NEW DELHI: A 41-year-old man allegedly committed
suicide by consuming
poison in
protest against a demolition drive in an unauthorised JJ colony in Barwala village near Bawana in outer Delhi on Thursday.
Initially, he had poured fuel and tried to set himself alight, but was stopped by policemen. However, while being taken to a hospital he told his wife that he had consumed poison. He was declared dead after being admitted to the hospital.
The incident occurred when a team led the district magistrate (north), additional DM and sub-divisional magistrate started demolishing an illegal JJ colony. The residents had been issued notices about the demolition a few days ago.
A team from the local police station had also asked the residents to vacate their slum clusters. While most had moved out with their belongings, the man, Surya Narayan, refused to leave his house.
Narayan claimed that he had not received any notice from the government and would leave only after he was assured of an alternative place to stay. Later, he brought a bottle of fuel from inside his house and poured it on himself.
“We saw him pouring the oil and rushed to stop him. He was carried to an ambulance and taken to a government hospital. However, on the way he told his wife that he had consumed poison before pouring the oil on himself,” said Anil Mittal, additional PRO, Delhi Police.
By the time he was taken to the ICU, Narayan had lost consciousness. He was declared dead soon after. An SDM inquiry has been initiated under Section 174 CrPC. His body was handed over to the family after an autopsy and cremated.
Police said Narayan had been working as a labourer at government construction units. He is survived by a wife and two children, one of whom is an infant.
His wife claimed that Narayan had been protesting against the demolition drive as they had no other place to go. She also works as a labourer at nearby construction sites. A large police force has been deployed in the area to prevent protests by other residents of the colony.
