Two dead, M1 southbound closed in multi-vehicle crash near Wollongong

Two people have died in a multi-vehicle car and truck crash on the M1 Princes Motorway near Wollongong.

Emergency services were called to the crash, which police said involved two trucks and three cars, in the southbound lanes near the Mount Keira Road overpass in Wollongong West about 2.10pm on Friday.

At least one truck caught fire, producing thick plumes of black smoke but a spokesman for the Transport Management Centre said it had been extinguished by emergency services.

The people who died were travelling in one of the cars.

Up to nine people were assessed by ambulance officers at the crash site, a spokesman for the ambulance service said.

"None of them required transport to hospital. All had relatively minor injuries," the spokesman said.

A number of emergency personnel including five Fire and Rescue NSW vehicles and multiple NSW Ambulance crews are on the scene along with police officers from the Southern Region Crash Investigation Unit.

All southbound lanes and two northbound lanes on the highway are closed.

"There is very heavy traffic in the area. Motorists should avoid the area and use Mount Ousley Road and the Princes Highway instead," the Transport Management Centre spokesman said.
