Student leaders begin fast unto death on AU campus

ALLAHABAD: Continuing with their agitation on the campus, student leaders of Allahabad University and that of other constituent colleges started their fast unto death outside the Union Hall of AU, from Thursday.
Meanwhile, the chief proctor has issued notice to 14 student leaders warning them to refrain from disturbing the campus failing which they would be rusticated from the university. Varsity has also forwarded 18 names to the police and district administration with the request that these student leaders are creating trouble on the campus and as such suitable action should be taken against them.
Earlier on the day, the student leaders assembled at the union hall and started their fast. “This student union has a rich legacy and have given the country several eminent political leaders and today AU administration is murdering the union just to hide their own failure”, said the sitting general secretary of AUSU, Shivam Singh.
Those who sat on dharna and observed fast included various student leaders and the sitting and former office bearers of the student union. They sat at the dharna under the banyan tree in front of the union hall, as the union hall building has been clocked by the varsity administration.
Meanwhile, the vice president of the AUSU, Abhishek Yadav has said that the student leaders would be intensifying their agitation from Friday (June 29) for which the place of the dharna would be shifted to VC’s office.
“The varsity administration is not taking our demand seriously and intents to implement the concept of student council which would kill the democratic rights of the students on the campus, so we have decided that from Friday, the portico of the VC’s office would be our site for showing our dissatisfaction”, said Yadav.
