Ludhiana: Punjab Agricultural Management & Extension Training Institute (Pameti), PAU campus, in collaboration with Extension Education Institute (EEI), Nilokheri organized three-day training programme on ‘Extension Strategies for Mainstreaming Women in agriculture & allied fields’ from June 25-27, 2019, in which 43 extension officials from State Agriculture & allied Departments, ATMA, Punjab Veterinary Vaccine Institute, PAU and Gadvasu participated.
Deputy director-HRM, Pameti, Rupinder Kaur, expressed concern over common practice to direct extension and training services primarily towards men as the contribution of women in agriculture & allied activities remains invisible. She said that mainstreaming women in agriculture and allied areas is the need of the hour. Therefore, to sensitize extension officials regarding all such issues, the training was organized.
Earlier, during the inaugural session, Labh Singh, regional director, EEI, Nilokheri, interacted with participants and said rural women are a vital link in agricultural development and their participation in development programmes should also be ensured alongside men. Pameti director HS Dhaliwal revealed that as rural-to-urban migration of men in search of paid employment is increasing, the role of women in agricultural production is becoming ever more dominant. There is a need to consider this ‘Feminization of Agriculture’, and extension functionaries should design the extension programmes accordingly.
