PATNA: In a shocking incident, a 50-year-old woman and her young daughter were tonsured, thrashed and subsequently paraded when they protested a rape attempt at a village in Vaishali district on Wednesday evening. The police on Thursday arrested two out of the seven accused, including a ward member, for their alleged involvement in the crime.
The incident took place at around 6.30 pm when the woman and her 22-year-old daughter were alone in their house under Bhagwanpur police station in Vaishali district on Wednesday. A group of residents of the village led by a ward member, Mohammad Khursheed, barged into the victims’ house and allegedly tried to outrage the modesty of the girl. When the girl’s mother came to her rescue, she was brutally assaulted by the men.
The accused later called a barber and got the heads of both the mother and the daughter shaved. Thereafter, the mother- daughter duo were paraded in the village while the local residents remained a mute spectator. The girl’s father was not present in the house when the incident took place. The victims reported the matter to the police late on Wednesday as the accused had allegedly threatened them with dire consequences.
The girl told the police that Khursheed, a resident of the same village, was harassing her for the past several months. On Wednesday, Khrusheed along with his six accomplishes entered her house and tried to rape her. When she protested their rape bid, she was severally beaten up and threatened with dire consequences. Both the mother-daughter showed marks of injuries on her body which suggested that they were beaten up black and blue.
Vaishali superintendent of police Manavjeet Singh Dhillon on Thursday said that altogether seven persons have been named as accused in the FIR lodged on the victim’s statement. While two of the accused - Kharusheed and Dasarath Thakur (barber) - have already been arrested, raids were underway to nab the remaining five accused. The accused were absconding after the incident, he told TOI.
The station house officer (SHO) of Bhagwanpur police station, Sanjay Kumar, said that the victims belonged to economically poor section of the society. The girl’s father used to eke out bread by begging alms. The accused have been booked for molestation and attempt to rape besides others. As the news spread like wildfire in the area, a large number of people rushed to the victims’ house. The police had a tough time in dealing with the unruly crowd.
Earlier, Hajipur additional superintendent of police MK Basantry said, “We are doing our best to ensure justice to the family. The investigation into the incident will be completed at the earliest,” he said, adding that two of the prime accused have already been arrested. The commission’s chairperson Dilmani Mishra said the incident was serious in nature and stern action would be taken against the accused. “Further action will be taken on the basis of the inquiry report,” she added.
This is not the first time such an incident has come to the fore in the state. In April this year, a 17-year-old girl was attacked with acid when she resisted rape attempt in Bhagalpur. The girl, who had suffered severe burn injuries in the acid attack, later succumbed to her injuries at a hospital in Delhi last week.
