Gurgaon: Believe it or not, just seven
seconds was all he took to break the lock of any two-wheeler and steal it.
Azad alias Kundu, now in police net, was operating independently in Delhi, Gurgaon and adjoining areas for the past six years after breaking away from the infamous Ammu gang of Mewat region.
Police claimed to have recovered 60 two-wheelers, one car and two mobile phones from his possession.
Kundu had stolen the vehicles from Delhi, Gurgaon, Faridabad, Palwal, Rewari, Bhiwadi, Mathura and Jhajjar and put them up for sale at different locations. So far, police have been able to link him to these 60 vehicle theft cases only.
The 40-year-old history-sheeter was arrested by the Sohna crime unit of Gurgaon police. The crime unit was led by inspector Satender Rawal, in Ambedkar Chowk on June 20, based on a tip-off.
A day later, he was produced in a court and remanded in five-day police custody. On Wednesday, he was produced again in the court and sent him to judicial custody.
During interrogation, Kundu told police he used to target two-wheelers parked at busy marketplaces.
Inserting a small T-shaped iron plate, he would break the lock and start the engine in the blink of an eye. But unlike the Ammu gang that disassembles vehicles and sells the spare parts, he used to sell the bikes for Rs 8,000 to Rs 12,000 each.
Cops said Kundu was arrested at least twice earlier — first in 2009 and then again in 2018. After his first arrest, he spent four years in jail before securing bail.
In September 2018, he was again arrested by Gurgaon police in connection with a vehicle theft. However, he managed to get out on bail after spending some time in jail.
“He was one of the main members of Ammu gang that used to steal cars, bikes and commit other crimes. But in 2013, soon after coming out of jail, he left the gang following differences with some members over share of loot and began to operate independently, targeting only two-wheelers,” said ACP (crime) Shamsher Singh.
“However, Kundu would never carry any weapon or indulge in fight in case he was spotted by anyone while trying to steal vehicles,” said ACP Singh.
