Panaji: Even as the issue of garbage disposal has been in the news since the last many days, especially after the Sonsoddo dump issue, it has now come to light that Goa currently generates 766 tonnes of waste per day and as per the projection, the state will generate 888 tonnes of waste per day by 2025, 992 tonnes per day by 2030 and 1,108 tonnes per day by 2035.
As per a survey report available with the Goa Waste Management Corporation (GWMC), which has been prepared for formulating Solid Waste Management Policy for the state, currently North Goa generates 467 tonnes of waste per day while South Goa generates 299 tonnes of waste per day.
In North Goa, 110 tonnes of waste per day is generated in Tiswadi, 196 tonnes in Bardez, 37 tonnes in Bicholim, 35 tonnes in Pernem, 67 tonnes in Ponda and 22 tonnes of waste in Sattari taluka. In South Goa, Salcete taluka generates the highest waste every day with 149 tonnes, 82 tonnes in Mormugao, 18 tonnes in Canacona, 29 tonnes in Quepem, 15 tonnes in Sanguem and 7 tonnes waste in Dharbandora taluka.
Furthermore, Goa generates 400 tonnes of organic waste per day besides 277 tonnes of recyclable waste, 60 tonnes of non-recyclable waste, 56 tonnes of inert waste and 23 tonnes of hazardous and sanitary waste.
The organic waste includes food waste, wet waste from street sweeping and gardens whereas the recyclable waste includes glass, metal, paper, plastic, e-waste and coconut shells. The non-recyclable waste includes Styrofoam, thermocol, cloth, jute, leather, rubber, rexine and wood.
The government has already decided to formulate a Solid Waste Management Policy 2019 for the state and it was discussed in the recently held meeting of Goa Waste Management Corporation.
