KOLKATA: A second year
engineering student living at a paying guest accommodation in Baghajatin allegedly attempted to commit suicide by slashing his wrist on the terrace of the PG, possibly after a spat with someone over phone.
Police said, the 22-year-old resident of Gangasagar in south 24 Parganas had suffered severe cut injuries on his left wrist and was admitted at a private hospital off EM Bypass. Till late on Thursday, his condition was stated to be critical.
The youth is a student of a private engineering college in Budge Budge and had been staying at a ground floor room of the PG accommodation with a group of friends since the start of the first semester.
Early on Thursday, the PG owner was awakened by a sound of someone falling down from the stairs of the terrace. She rushed up to find the youth bleeding profusely from his hand lying on the landing between the terrace and first floor. She immediately called out neighbours for help three of whom came in from nearby houses.
“The youth had already suffered a severe blood loss and it seemed he had cut himself on the terrace and while trying to come down, had tripped and fell down from the stairs. We took him to a private hospital and got him admitted there. On the way I had called the police by dialing 100 and the owner possibly called up his parents,” said a neighbour.
Police said, they found multiple empty bottles of liquour at his room and the terrace. “The youth said he was in a state of depression because of some family trouble. We will speak with him again once he gets fitter,” said a senior officer at Lalbazar.
