Closed case: Roof to be shut for Marvel Stadium day matches this season

The AFL has decided to close the roof for day matches at Marvel Stadium for the remainder of the season.

League officials have been holding meetings this week discussing whether to keep its policy, or to shut the stadium roof indefinitely in the wake of a public backlash and several complaints from players and broadcasters.

This week’s decision means that Sunday’s game between St Kilda and Richmond will be played under a closed roof no matter what the weather conditions are like.

Aside from Sunday's game, there are four other day home-and-away matches during the day at the Docklands venue this season - the Carlton v Gold Coast game in round 18, the Western Bulldogs v Fremantle match in round 19,  the Essendon v Port Adelaide game in round 20 and the round 21 clash between St Kilda and Fremantle.

The Age understands that the roof policy will be reviewed at the end of the season.
