Allahabad: Mob ransacks two police vehicles after road mishap

ALLAHABAD: An irate mob ransacked three vehicles, including two police jeeps, after a dumper ran over and killed a cyclist at Baidwar village under the limits of Koraon police station in trans Yamuna area of Allahabad in UP on Wednesday morning.
The mob also thrashed another dumper driver severely before police could rescue him from the clutches of villagers.
The incident occurred at around 11:30m when the cyclist - identified as Indrajeet (35), who was coming from a nearby market - was crushed under the wheels of the dumper, the police said.
The slain cyclist was a resident of Ulda village.
Infuriated locals first blocked the vehicular movement on busy Koraon–Dramanandganj Road, thrashed the driver of another dumper who followed the errant dumper and resorted to brickbatting with police when police officials arrived the spot to take stock of situation.
The road blockade by lasted about five hours and the police had to use mild force to disperse the agitators.
Locals alleged, “They had dialed 100 number soon after the road mishap, but police caught the first dumper driver who actually caused road mishap, but could not take any action. When locals came to know about this, they caught another dumper driver following the first dumper and thrashed him severely."
The situation became grim when locals came to know that police had freed the accused dumper driver and started pelting stones on police jeeps.
Deputy SP (Meja) Rajeshwar Singh told TOI, “The situation was under control and adequate police forces have been deployed to defuse the tension." He further admitted that the angry mob had ransacked some vehicles including two police jeeps when police forces arrived at the spot to pacify the protestors. The body has been sent for post-mortem.

Initially, locals blocked the vehicular movement by placing the body in middle of road and were not ready to listen to police officials regarding the incident. When a group of policemen made an abortive attempt to pacify them, they got agitated and involved in heated arguments.
As the strength of policemen was not much at the spot, the villagers took an upper hand and started pelting stones on police and other vehicles. The police managed to control the protestors only when forces from five police stations were rushed to the spot.
